At Playhouse Academy, we recognise that the mental health of children and young people is a growing concern worldwide. Research shows that emotional well-being impacts not only children’s happiness but also their friendships, learning, and future health. When mental health challenges are not addressed early, they can carry on into adulthood (Taylor et al., 2019).

What Affects Children’s Mental Health?
Family and Relationships – Warm, positive connections with parents and caregivers support resilience, while conflict or stress at home can increase risks (Katsantonis & McLellan, 2023).
Health and Lifestyle – Sleep, screen time, exercise, and healthy routines all play an important role. Children with ongoing health conditions are more likely to experience emotional challenges (Panagi et al., 2022; McArthur et al., 2021).
School and Social Environment – Sleep, screen time, exercise, and healthy routines all play an important role. Children with ongoing health conditions are more likely to experience emotional challenges (Panagi et al., 2022; McArthur et al., 2021).
COVID-19 Impact – Lockdowns and school closures increased stress, anxiety, and isolation for many children (Lever et al., 2023; Sayal et al., 2022).

How We Can Support Children
Strong Family Bonds – Quality time, open communication, and support at home make a big difference (Panchal et al., 2021).
Healthy Routines – Regular sleep, balanced screen use, and active play help children feel secure and confident (Hale et al., 2022).
School Support – Teachers and schools play an important role in creating safe, supportive spaces where children feel they belong (Johnson et al., 2023).
Community and Services – Access to counseling, mental health resources, and physical activities can strengthen resilience (Edbrooke-Childs et al., 2022).
Early Development – The Harvard Center on the Developing Child (2023) highlights that healthy brain development depends on supportive relationships and reducing toxic stress. Early interventions help children build strong foundations for learning, behaviour, and lifelong health.

Our Commitment
At Playhouse Academy, we believe prevention is key. By working together—families, teachers, and communities—we can nurture children’s mental health early on. Through play, strong relationships, and supportive environments, children can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
